Canadian Scientists Discover a Potential Breakthrough

We all know about the superpowers of hemp and cannabis – the plant that can do just about anything – literally. It’s hard to find another plant that is as versatile and accessible, but we’re fortunate that we can access it for just about anything we need – from building materials, textiles, health and wellness remedies, pet products and so, so much more. CBD is one of the most beneficial cannabinoids, but is just one of hundreds. We have yet to tap into the full power, but that is rapidly changing. We already talked about the many benefits of CBD and CBG, so it should come as no surprise that scientists are finding a link between cannabis and the coronavirus… in the form of a much sought-after treatment.

Researchers are working around the clock to find a vaccine or cure for the deadly coronavirus, and scientists at the University of Lethbridge in Canada have taken the approach of examining the Cannabis sativa plant for a potential breakthrough. It seems they are close. We have to make it clear that the findings do not apply to either medical marijuana or the CBD that you would normally buy. After testing 25 strains of CBD, the researchers discovered 13 that actually produced the results they were hoping for. What these strains all have in common? They are high in CBD and low in THC.

Here’s what they learned. As we know, the coronavirus spreads through respiratory droplets. These 13 strains that are high in CBD “affect the ACE2 pathways that the bug uses to enter the body, effectively blocking the proteins that provide a gateway for the virus.” The scientists concluded that it could “reduce the virus’ entry points [to the body] by up to 70%.” That’s a huge result. The potential for CBD as a tool to help slow the spread of the virus would be significant on a worldwide scale.

While the scientists are not yet at the point to declare “Eureka” on a coronavirus treatment, they are encouraged enough by their findings to move to a more large-scale study. The race is on to find the “magic pill,” and CBD is once again showing how versatile it really is, and becoming increasingly valuable to our overall health and wellbeing.

This is a story that is going to be constantly evolving and updating as more focus turns to using CBD as a treatment – whether in an adjunct form or as a primary treatment – for many of the ailments and diseases that plague us. We’re really just scratching the surface. As more results are released, we’ll be sure to keep you posted. But thanks to these encouraging findings, we can likely expect to see CBD playing a role in the reversal of the coronavirus spread. The clock’s ticking.
